The east wall is constructed in opus reticulatum, the same as the west wall. The walls of the gate are older than the Castellum Aquae which has been cut into them. A castellum is a Roman structure that was situated at the end of an aqueduct, where the water was delivered to a basin and then dispersed. Le Castellum Aquae in Nîmes (also called the castellum divisorium de Nîmes) is at the end of the 50 kilometre aqueduct (known as the Nîmes Aqueduct) that brought water from from a spring near Uzès, the Eure Fountain, to what was then the Roman city of also called: castellum aquae There is evidence that water quality was an issue in antiquity. All that was needed to filter the water was essentially a large tank where the speed of the current would be sufficiently retarded for the impurities in suspension to settle to the bottom. The so-called Castellum Aquae, is actually a three storey cistern block (Building 1) that also formed the eastern end of the northern range of the Palazzo Imperiale. It was built in the Trajanic period. Its north side rested on the pre-Trajanic quay that defined the south side of the Claudian basin and on a Trajanic quay to the south.
